Celebrated Author Returns to Christ Church for Commemoration

Category: Announcements Tags: , ,

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, Christ Church, Philadelphia will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of the Rev. Benjamin Dorr, church rector during the Civil War years, with a presentation from Bill Quigley, author of "Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union."

Rev. Dorr had the difficult job of holding together a split congregation during the trying years of the Civil War, a challenge compounded by his fear of losing his son, Captain William Dorr, to the war effort. "Pure Heart" is Quigley's history of these two individuals. In celebrating Rev. Benjamin Dorr, Christ Church, Philadelphia welcomes Quigley to discuss how the rector's story applies to those struggling with today's partisan politics and culture wars.

Entitled "Better Angels in America's Civil War," this free lecture is jointly sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania's History Committee and Christ Church, Philadelphia. The event begins at 2 p.m. in the Christ Church sanctuary at 2nd and Market Street. Books will be available for sale.
