Fixing Everything but the Typos: Preserving Rare Books and Records from the Christ Church Archives (Virtual on Zoom)

Over the last 15 years Richard Homer, Senior Book Conservator at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, and his colleagues have helped Christ Church halt the deterioration of our archives. The archives, stored in the church itself for more than two centuries, lived in conditions not ideal for the storage of paper. Pages working loose from bindings, bindings suffering from red leather rot, iron gall ink eating away at paper, mice munching on paper, and an occasional bout of mold over the centuries have taken a toll. Richard will walk us through the labor intensive process of restoring these valuable records to exhibit worthy condition.
