It’s not pennies that caused the crack down Ben Franklin’s grave — it’s moisture. The crack will be fixed this winter.

A campaign to raise $10,000 to save Benjamin Franklin’s gravestone at the Christ Church Burial Ground across from Independence Mall has surpassed its goal thanks in large part to a $5,000 contribution from rocker Jon Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea.

On a rainy day more than 20 years ago, educator William Quigley Jr. and his colleagues were hauling archival materials from a flooding basement at the Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Mass., when they came upon a mystery.
